Fourth Commandment
Sunday, 07 March 2010
Speaker:
Pastor Bryan Sims
Passages:
Exodus 20:8, Exodus 23:12
Description:
The Sabbath. The Fourth Commandment is certainly the most difficult of the commands to understand. Why does Jesus debate with the Jewish religious leaders about the Sabbath if it is one of the 10 Commandments? Is Saturday still the day set aside or is it now Sunday or no day in particular? To know what the Sabbath means today, we need first to understand what it meant in the Old Testamwnt: a day of rest and worship. However, the Sabbath principle went beyond this. It was embedded throughout their society with debts, servitude, the land property as well as their other religious festivals. Also, the Sabbath was the identifying sign of the Mosaic Covenant-it set them apart for the Gentiles as God's people. As significant as the Sabbath was, the appostle says that the Sabbath is a mere "shadow" compared to what we have now in Christ, the Lord of the Sabbath. We will see why next time.
Third Commandment
Sunday, 28 February 2010
Speaker:
Pastor Bryan Sims
Passages:
Exodus 20:7, Exodus 3:13-15
Description:
This command often brings shame by those who are guilty or a chuckle by those who dismiss it. However, using the Lord's name as profanity simply scratches the surface of it. In scripture, this command often dealt with making oaths. Jesus' teaching is important here- and using God's name inreverently. Also, we need to know how to use his name properly. Finally, we see how Jesus powerfully impacts the Third Commandment.
Second Commandment
Sunday, 21 February 2010
Speaker:
Pastor Bryan Sims
Passages:
Exodus 20:4
Description:
Whereas the first command deals with who we should worship, the second comand deals with how we should worship. God prohibits us from making an image of anything in creation as a representation of himself because it distorts and diminishes him. Also, we are not to make images of false gods. Here, we learn that this includes anything that receives our highest allegiance such as money, careers, family, and so on. Finally, we explore the relation between the second and Jesus - the image of the invisible God.
First Commandment
Sunday, 14 February 2010
Speaker:
Pastor Bryan Sims
Passages:
Exodus 20:1-2
Description:
The first commandment - you shall have no other gods before me - is also the most important. Today we explore what the command means and its significance, especially of Jesus who both affirms the command and claims to be divine.
10 Commandments-Their Signficance
Sunday, 07 February 2010
Speaker:
Pastor Bryan Sims
Passages:
Exodus 19:16
Description:
It is hard to underestimate the importance of the 10 Commandments. Before diving into the commands themselves it is important to grasp their significance. For one thing, their, significance is displayed when they were given-incrediable natural phenomena like thunder, lightning, and fire; the voice of God to his people which is unique in scripture, and the tablets written by the finger of God. Also, we see, their significance in how they are developed and illistrated in the rest of scripture. The commands are a foundation for later revelation. Finally, they're significnace for our lives today by restrainig sin in society, driving sinners to salvation, and Christian spiritual growth.
3 John
Sunday, 31 January 2010
Speaker:
Pastor Bryan Sims
Passages:
3 John
Description:
Often overlooked, 3 John gives us a fascinating glimpse into the life of the early church, experiencing problems that occur today as well. In this letter, John writes to his friend Gaius, likely a fellow pastor, to praise his support of traveling missionaries. Also, he gives instructions in dealing with an ungodly person in Gaius church - Diotrephes who is out for power and control.
lSanctity of Life
Sunday, 17 January 2010
Speaker:
Pastor Bryan Sims
Passages:
Psalm 139:13-16
Description:
Life is an incrediable gift from God. It is indeed sacred and something to be valued and defended. Today, we explore 3 questions: When does life begin, looking at biblical and scientific evidence? Why is life sacred? And what are some characteristics we can display as Christians to stand for life?
2 John
Sunday, 10 January 2010
Speaker:
Pastor Bryan Sims
Passages:
2 John 1-13
Description:
Though 2 John is the shortest book in the Bible, it helps us in our overall understanding of God and Christian living. 2 John was written by the apostle John to a specific congregation struggling with some of the same issues covered in 1 John: false teachers denying the apostolic testimony about Jesus and creating an atmosphere of disobedience and livelessness. We also discover important practical advice about hospitality and such false teachers.

Description:
To begin, we explore the application of the second certainty - answered prayer - to believers struggling with "sin that does lead to death." Finally, we are encouraged by three more certainties in the Christian life: victory over sin and satan, adoption into God's family, and knowledge that Jesus Christ is the true God and eternal life Amen.
