With this authority,however, some great responsibility. Husbands are given an extremely high standard by which to treat their wives: to love their wives as Christ loved the church. This means their love should be both sacrificial and beneficial.

According to the Bible, the relation between the husband and wife is one of equal essence yet distinct roles. Before discussing these specific roles, it is essential to know the foundation for all relations: the Trinity. Scripture reveals that though all the persons in the Godhead are equal, they also maintain distinct roles and authority. For example, not only was the son submissive to the Father during the incarnation, this pattern existed before and after the incarnation. Also, God created a world full of relations where the pattern of equal essence yet distinct roles abound.
